  • Stephen Patton: All the engines on the Island of Sodor love their work. But sometimes there is too much work. That's when Sir Topham Hatt brings new engines to the island. Salty the Dockyard Diesel is one of these engines from the Mainland. He loves to tell tales of the sea.
  • Salty: We heaved until the old freighter finally caught the tide.
  • Stephen Patton: He would say.
  • Salty: Arrgh, it's good to be useful.
  • Stephen Patton: Salty is excited about coming to the Island of Sodor to work on Edward's branch line. Islands are surrounded by the sea. Salty loves the sea. Soon he arrived at his new job while Derek was at the works. BoCo the Diesel Engine and Bill and Ben the twin engines had never seen a new diesel like Salty before. But the twins were jealous of him.
  • Salty: Ahoy mateys. Salty, pride of the seven seas. I'm a new diesel and I'm here to give you some help.
  • Stephen Patton: Bill and Ben didn't think they needed any help, especially from a diesel. But, BoCo was delighted to meet the new friend on the Clay Pits. He introduced Salty himself, Bill and Ben.
  • The Quarry-Master: Welcome to the Sodor China Clay Works.
  • Stephen Patton: The Quarry-Master said proudly. Salty looked all around. Everywhere he looked, he saw nothing but cliffs and dust.
  • Salty: A clay pits?!
  • Stephen Patton: He cried.
  • Salty: But there must be some mistake. I'm a dockyard diesel.
  • The Quarry-Master: You're a Quarry diesel now.
  • Stephen Patton: Said the quarry-master. And he explained that they had to complete an important job for Sir Topham Hatt. Salty was sad that he wouldn't be working by the sea. But he knew what it meant to be a really useful engine and he sent to work at once.
  • Salty: Ah well.
  • Stephen Patton: He said.
  • Salty: At least they're be trucks.
  • The Quarry-Master: Well, You better mind them.
  • Stephen Patton: The Quarry-Master said sternly.
  • The Quarry-Master: They can be a bother.
  • Bill: He won't last five minutes.
  • Stephen Patton: Said Bill.
  • Ben: Those trucks will trip him up soon enough.
  • Stephen Patton: Said Ben. BoCo and the quarry-master glared at the twins, But to Bill and Ben surprise, the trucks seem to give Salty no trouble at all.
  • Salty: ...the tiller spins and the captain yawns. Yo-ho-ho and a bucket of prawns the tiller spins.
  • Stephen Patton: Sang Salty.
  • Trucks: And the captain yawns.
  • Stephen Patton: Sang the trucks and giggled. Thanks to Salty, Sir Topham Hatt's important job was almost done. Bill and Ben were surprised and still a little jealous. That evening when the job was done, Salty came to share the shed with BoCo and the twins.
  • Ben: Here comes Mr. Show Off.
  • Stephen Patton: Grouched Ben.
  • BoCo: You have to admit he's got a knack with those trucks.
  • Stephen Patton: Said BoCo.
  • Bill: My driver says he'll bore the boats off us with his stories.
  • Stephen Patton: Huffed Bill. But Salty didn't say a word. He didn't come near the shed. BoCo was worried. He rolled along side and asked him what he was doing on his own.
  • Salty: Oh I thought I might I catch a bit of sea breeze.
  • BoCo: You really do miss the sea, don't you?
  • Stephen Patton: Asked BoCo.
  • Salty: Aye.
  • Stephen Patton: Said Salty.
  • Salty: I do.
  • Stephen Patton: But Salty knew the quarry work was important. The next day he tried to show Bill and Ben his secret with the trucks.
  • Salty: I like working to a musical rhythm.
  • Stephen Patton: He said.
  • Salty: And so do the trucks. Why don't you give it a try, me hearties?
  • Stephen Patton: The twins couldn't believe what they had heard. Bill and Ben tried to do it the same way. They buffered up to the trucks.
  • Bill: Here we go, here we go, here we go.
  • Stephen Patton: But try as they might.
  • Ben: No we don't, no we don't, no we don't don't don't.
  • Stephen Patton: The twins could not move the trucks the way Salty could. Later that day, Sir Topham Hatt arrived. He was surprised the job had been completed.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Well done.
  • Stephen Patton: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • BoCo: It was Salty's idea.
  • Stephen Patton: Said BoCo.
  • BoCo: We couldn't have done it without him.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I've got a bigger job for you, Salty.
  • Salty: Aye-aye, Sir. What kind of quarry is it?
  • Sir Topham Hatt: Quarry?
  • Stephen Patton: Said Sir Topham Hatt.
  • Sir Topham Hatt: I'm sending you to Brendam Docks.
  • Salty: The docks!
  • Stephen Patton: Salty exclaimed.
  • Salty: The docks are hard by the sea! Oh thank you Sir!
  • Stephen Patton: He said.
  • Salty: This reminds me of the time in Bimini.
  • Stephen Patton: And Salty was telling stories again. He loves Brendam Docks in part of Edward’s branch line. He gets more work done then any three engines and feels really useful. And only the trucks know his secrets.
  • Salty: ...the tiller spins and the captain yawns.
