Here are the red engines.

Winston[]

Winston was the first red engine known on the NWR.

Biography[]

Winston was built in 1889 at the Horwich Works. He was sent to the NWR in 1900 to help out Edward on the mainline. In 1913, he was sent to push Henry out of the Tunnel, but no sucsess. In the Railway Series, this engine was originally illustrated to be James. However, children wrote to the Reverend asking why James was red before he got repainted in the third book. With all the confusion, Awdry decided that it was not James, but was instead Winston.

In 1915 (before Thomas arrived), the United Kingdom asked The Fat Director for an engine to help with the extra war time traffic and Winston volunteered. Winston befriended Mary, Alice's sister and Colin Stiles, a 16 years old porter at Norbridge station. On Feb 10th,1915, a week out from the Normandy Landings in Northern France, Winston was pushing Mary into Norbridge station when the latter's injector failed. Winston went back to collect his ammunition train, but when he passed the station again, a frantic Colin Stiles flagged him downed. Winston stopped, annoyed, only to realize that his train was on fire. Winston's fireman uncoupled the first van, where the fire was, from the rest of the train. Winston set off, telling his driver, James Clarke, to jump clear. But he refused, claiming that someone has to get Winston clear. Back at Norbridge station, Stiles and the fireman were just discussing about the matter when an explosion ripped the air. Winston's driver had been killed and it was unknown what happened to him ever since. A monument was placed in honor of Winston and his driver. The engines of Sodor were only informed of what happened forty years later.

In 2013, Stephen crashed into a mine and he discovered Winston. He brought Winston out of the mine. So, Winston was repainted blue and he was back in business.

Personality[]

He is very helpful and Sir Topham Hatt I understands that Winston tried his best to push Henry.

Basis[]

Winston is based on an L&YR Class 28 with an added pony truck, a Belpaire firebox and a Fowler tender, very much like James. However it might have been the same basis as the first one, since the earlier illustrations showed him as a 4-6-2.

Livery[]

This engine is painted red with yellow and black lining. He/she has red wheels and a red dome

Voice Actor[]

  • NWR1991 (always will voice him)

Trivia[]

  • In the original, Middleton illustrations, the first and second

red engines were depicted as the same character, hence them having had the same wheel configuration.

  • Winston's role in The Sad Story of Henry was replaced by Thomas when the story was adapted into the television series. Ironically, James took his role in the special, The Adventure Begins.

Eagle[]

Eagle was the second red engine known on the NWR.

Biography[]

Eagle was built in 1889 at the Horwich Works. He and Winston were sent to the NWR in 1900 to help out Edward on the mainline. When Henry arrived at Killden, Eagle asked Henry what he was planning. But, Henry couldn't answer.
