Message to Mattel Creations: Please make this into an actual movie if it does happen.

The Secret of the Cave Treasure is a 2021 Thomas & Friends movie.

Production

HiT Entertainment and Prime Minister, Boris Johnson greenlit this movie during the production of the reboot, All Engines Go!

This movie was made in tribute of the original CGI that was used from Hero of the Rails to this special. It also honors the death of former narrator Michael Angelis and Tinky Winky voice actor Simon Shelton.

However, archive recordings of Shelton from the original Teletubbies were used in honor of him, similar to the uses of Paul Newman's archive recordings in Cars 3 and Don Rickles' archive recordings in Toy Story 4.

During a virtual meeting with John Hasler and Shelton's friends, John Simmit, Nikky Smedley and Pui Fan Lee, Simmit, Smedley and Lee agreed to use their archive recordings from the original Teletubbies.

Plot

When Thomas finds an old mine exit, his news becomes spreadable to his love interest, Ashima and all of his friends. Because of that, Ashima and all of Thomas' friends make Thomas feel even prouder than he was before. But, Diesel makes a plan to make Thomas feel silly by giving him no coal and water. But, his plan backfires when he destroys Percy's new trucks which makes Percy feel very upset. So, Thomas goes on a mission to find something better than Percy's new trucks. But he gets himself trapped in an old abandoned mine and find themselves on a raging river on a raft. So all of Thomas's friends, including Nia, Dory, Marlin, Nemo, Pingu, the Teletubbies, Oh, the MerseyGirls and Ant & Dec and his love interest, Ashima try to find them before Thomas is lost forever.

Trivia

  • On the premiere date of the film in the UK, Ant & Dec opened the film at all cinemas nationwide.
  • The movie only has one completely new character. The rest of the new characters are ones that we have seen but are new to the Thomas & Friends universe.
  • Due to being the final special of the Thomas & Friends series aired overall, it is also:
    • The last ever special to be animated by Jam Filled Toronto.
    • The final special produced by Ian McCue and to have Andrew Brenner as the head writer.
    • The last ever Thomas themed product where drivers and firemen are present.
    • The final appearances of all characters featured in this special.
    • The final special to have all its featured voice actors involved in production.
    • The final special to feature music composed by Chris Renshaw.
    • The final special to feature a narrator.
  • The movie was originally planned for a release date of August 20th 2020. But due to the coronavirus pandemic and the death of Caroline Flack on February 15th 2020 and former narrator Michael Angelis on May 28th 2020, it was pushed back to September 19th 2021.
  • In one of the scenes in the film, someone is driving The Overtaker from Top Gear.
  • Audio of John Hasler from Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure is used when Thomas falls into the giant hole that Scrat causes.
  • This marks the first for a few things:
    • The first time since Series 21 where an actual person and not a character is the narrator.
    • The first time since Series 21 where there is barely any bouncing.
  • This marks a couple of things for Flora:
    • Her firs speaking role since the twelfth series episode, Tram Trouble.
    • Her first (and only) appearance in full CGI.
    • Her only appearance in 3D animation.
  • This marks a few of things for Gator:
    • His first appearance in a special since Tale of the Brave.
    • His first appearance and first speaking role since the eighteenth series episode, Long Lost Friend.
  • Chris Wedge joins the voice cast.
  • Lightning McQueen is seen in his Rust-eze paint job from the beginning of Cars 3.
  • This marks a few of things for Ant & Dec:
    • Their first appearance in a movie since Alien Autopsy.
    • The first time since Love Actually where they play themselves in a movie.
    • Their first (and only) appearance in full CGI.

    • Their first appearance on TV since Britain's Got Talent: Christmas Spectacular.
    • Their first (and only) appearance in full CGI.
  • This marks a few things for some characters:
    • Pingu's first ever appearance in a movie/special of some kind (unless you count his special, Pingu at the Wedding Party).
    • Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa and Po's first ever appearance in any movie/special of some kind (unless you count their appearances in their specials which combine episodes of their show).
    • Lightning McQueen, Mater, Sally, Luigi and Guido's first appearance in a movie since Cars 3.
    • Dory, Marlin and Nemo's first appearance in a movie since Finding Dory.

    • Oh, Tip and Pig's first appearance in a movie since Home.
    • Turbo and Chet's first appearance in a movie since Turbo.
  • This marks a few things for Mario:
    • His first appearance in an animated movie of some kind.
    • His first appearance in a movie since the live action Super Mario Bros movie.
  • The first time since Thomas and the Magic Railroad where a real life singer, that being Sia, performs a song during the credits with scenes from the movie.
  • Mattel Creations said that during the scene of where Chelsea and Julia are feeling sad about Thomas going missing, a lot of people cried during the scene.
  • The scream that Woody makes when he almost falls into the cave is the scream from Toy Story (1995) when he meets Buzz for the first time.
  • In the movie, Ant is shown to have grown a beard similarly to how his real life counterpart did from May of 2016 until he shaved in late 2018.
  • Ant & Dec make a reference to one their shows, that being I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!
  • Dec says his catchphrase, "I'll smash your face in" about four to five times in the film.
  • Oh turns into some of his colours of sight during the movie. Those being:
    • Yellow (for panic and fear)
    • Pink (for likeness)
    • Red (for anger)
  • This marks a couple of things for Ashima:
    • This marks her first appearance in a special since The Great Race.
    • The first time where she has fallen in love with another engine, that being Thomas.
  • This marks a few things for Basil Brush:
    • His first (and only) appearance in full CGI.
    • His first (and only) appearance in a movie.
  • The first time since Big World! Big Adventures! where someone breaks the fourth wall.

Goofs

  • The scene in where Ant & Dec use their launcher to hit the giant rock, their medium sized rock hit it very hard and succeeds with the rocks blocking the cave exit. But, in reality, they wouldn't be able to do it.
  • The Other Side by Jason Derulo and Midnight Sky by Miley Cyrus are shown in the credits when they actually weren't heard in the film. The issue was corrected in the bonus features.
  • A faint crack is seen when the scene cuts to the MerseyGirls being sad.
