Thomas and the Royal Engine is a 1st series premiere episode from Series 24.


An invitation from the Queen sends Thomas and the crew to London as they weave through delays and debacles while racing to a royal celebration.

    • The events of the fourth series episode Paint Pots and Queens are mentioned.
    • Henry and Gordon mention the events of the Railway Series story and cancelled episode, Gordon Goes Foreign.
    • The Fat Controller mixing up 'suspicious' and 'auspicious' references the Railway Series story Centenary, in which Percy does the same.
    • Henry's rebuild at Crewe in the first series episode The Flying Kipper is mentioned.
    • The Fat Controller taking over the role of Thomas' fireman is a callback to the fifth series episode Lady Hatt's Birthday Party.
    • While helping Duchess, Thomas says "Little engines can do big things" which is a reference to Thomas and the Magic Railroad.
    • A photograph of Sir Topham and Lady Hatt from the twenty-second series episode, Rosie is Red, can be seen in Topham Hall's bedroom.
  • This episode marks the first of a few things:

    • James' first appearance in a series premiere since the nineteenth series episode, Who's Geoffrey?.
    • Beresford's first appearance since Journey Beyond Sodor.
    • The first episode since the twenty-first series finale, Confused Coaches, not to feature a fantasy sequence.
  • This episode marks The Mainland Diesels and Beresford's last appearances in Jam Filled Toronto.
  • Nia is the only member of the Steam Team not to appear in this episode.
